‘Hunar Gah’ a Wahki/ Persian word, means ‘Place of Handiness’ is the new name for Gulmit Carpet Center. The Center was initiated by KADO in 1997 with the support of SDC in order to provide economic opportunities to the women unable to continue their education. The centre initially trained 25 women in weaving, designing, dying, cutting and marketing.
The Centre was divested to the women artisans as an independent company which is now in the ownership of the 16 women artisans. The idea was well received by the artisans and the organization as well, and within eight years of its journey it enabled the women artisans to own it as the first entrepreneur, while setting example for women of the area.

Although the skill of carpet weaving is not a historic Hunza one, the carpets skill have traditional and unique element to them. Their uniqueness lies in the fact that designs and motifs used are  taken from traditional Hunza embroidery patterns and only vegetable dyes and good quality local wool are used in the manufacturing these products.

The center has a simple production and sales strategy and managed efficiently on the base of the experiences gained over the year. This initiative has resulted in increase of the income which has ultimately improved the socio-economic status, increased self worth, confidence, respect in the family and community.
