The most fascinating chapter of the KHDP was the transfer of ownership to the women artisans in 2006. The project was divested into 5 independent women owned handicraft companies to ensure the sustainability of the impact of the programme. Four of the companies were formed by the group of artisans working in secondary production units and the fifth one comprised of the artisans and women employees working in central production and marketing units during the project phase. These companies were registered under companies ordinance. The women groups went through painstaking capacity building process in order to graduate from ‘workers to owner’ and from ‘employees to employers.

These companies are now independently managing their own businesses including production and marketing. KADO is still providing overall supervision and helps in book-keeping, marketing and linkages creation for the companies.

Women Arts and Crafts (Pvt.) Ltd.

The company, based at Karimabad, is owned and managed by six (6) women professionals (the former workers of KHDP Secondary Production Unit Karimabad) and is registered under the companies’ ordinance 1984. Approximately 450 poor women artisan are engaged as direct beneficiaries with the company.
